North of Houston is a small nature preserve, the Kleb Woods Nature Preserve. It is named for this man, Elmer Kleb, who passed away in 1997 at the age of 92. He was not a hermit but a recluse, the distinction being that a hermit doesn't want to talk to anybody while a recluse is glad to talk to people as long as it's on his own terms. I have been meaning to tell Elmer's story forever, but here are a couple of links that tell it much better than I ever could. The first one was written in 2004, after the preserve was established. The second one was written in 1988, when it looked like Elmer might be forced from the land he'd lived on his entire life
