This Odd Couple is outside the former Wonford post-office that now serves as a community hub. In Celtic times Wonford was known as Gwyn Ffrwd - Gwyn meaning fair, white or holy, and Ffryd meaning shallow stream. A Saxon charter refers to it as Wynford, when it was part of important royal lands rich in deer, wild boar and wolves. The land came under various ownerships over the ensuing centuries and remained a village outside of the Exeter boundary until 1910 when South Wonford, East Wonford and Heavitree were incorporated into the City of Exeter. Most of the numerous local shops which flourished in the last century have now closed and been converted into houses and the former St Loyes Church opposite the Odd Couple at one time served as a children's nursery but is also now a private dwelling-place.
