Composed of gypsum plaster from hydrated calcium sulfate and glue, this magical little ditty was introduced in 1927 by the Muralo Company of Bayonne, New Jersey. It was then patented and trademarked in 1928. However, the term "spackle" has since become a genericized trademark applied to a variety of household hole-filling products. The product name was likely derived from the German word "spachtel" meaning "putty knife" or "filler."
This cache, like spackle, is helping fill a hole along the Virginia Capital Trail. It is part of a combined effort by Geocaching Hampton Roads members to place geocaches along the Sherwood Forest, Chickahominy Riverfront, and Greensprings phases of the trail. Upon the project's completion, a powertrail of 52 miles now extends through four municipalities, connecting Jamestown to Richmond.
