Geocache Description:


The Hachigata Castle trace became the country designated historic spot as a representative castle trace of the age of civil strife in 1932. The castle is a natural stronghold, because the center of the castle is built on the cliff sandwiched between Arakawa and the Fukazawa rive. This spot was the important place for traffic and was the important spot that faced each other in Joshu and the Shinshu area. It is said that Kageharu Nagao who was a vassal of Kanto district administrator Yamauchi Uesugi constructed the castle in 1476 and Kuniyasu Hojyou who was the fourth son of Ujiyasu Houjou of Odawara equiped and expand the Hachigata castle and became the current size. After that when Hideyoshi Toyotomi attacked Odawara in 1590, the northern countries forces such as Toshiie Maeda and Kagekatsu Uesugi surounded the castle and Ujikuni Houjou gave in after the siege for more than one month and the castle became to surbodinate to Tokugawa at last. The Hachigata Castle trace is chosen as "Saitama birthplace 100 selections  of proud in the 21st century", "100 Japanese fine castles", "Japanese historical park 100 selections", "Japanese historic spot 101 selections" etc..

鉢形城跡は、戦国時代の代表的な城郭跡として、昭和7年に国指定史跡となりました。 城の中心部は、荒川と深沢川に挟まれた断崖絶壁の上に築かれていて天然の要害をなしています。 この地は、交通の要所に当たり、上州や信州方面に対峙する重要な地点でした。
鉢形城は、文明8年(1476)関東管領山内上杉氏の家臣長尾景春が築城したと伝えられています。 後に、この地域の豪族藤田泰邦に入婿した小田原の北条氏康の四男氏邦が整備拡充し、現在の大きさとなりました。 その後、天正18年(1590)豊臣秀吉の小田原攻めの際に、前田利家や上杉景勝等の北国軍に包囲され、1ヶ月余りにおよぶ籠城の後に、北条氏邦は城兵の助命を条件に開城し徳川の手に落ちました。
鉢形城跡は「21世紀に残したい埼玉ふるさと自慢100選」、「日本100名城」、「日本の歴史公園100選」、「日本の史跡101選」などに選ばれています。
