Geocache Description:

The Lang stane of Gourock, otherwise known as the Granny Kempock Stone, has many a story to her name. *Bring a writing utensil*

The Granny Kempock stone is said to be named for her appearance when viewed from the river; standing on the Cliffside like a withered old woman looking out over the water. Although her origins are a bit of a mystery, it is speculated that the stone was once part of an alter to the pagan god Baal. Whatever her origins, Granny Kempock has been a source of myth and legend for as long as she's stood proud over Gourock. Sailors used to circle her seven times for luck; often in a bid to secure some good fortune that would bring them home safely from sea to their waiting lovers. In the 1600s, Mary Lamont and the witches of Inverclyde were found to be dancing round the stone under the moonlight - I wonder what magic they were conjuring up? Wiccans (and followers of many other spirituality based beliefs) hold rituals of moondancing for various reasons, such as to bring luck, wisdom or good health. The Granny Kempock fits in with all of the above so maybe they were on to something... Sadly, in more recent times, the Granny Kempock stone has been left standing somewhat forgotten; a mear stone on a cliff that is passed by without much wonder or awe - but for the few who do still believe in her magic. So wether you believe in magic or not; while visiting this place of myth and legend, why not do a little dance with Granny Kempock and see what luck or fortune finds you with her blessing.
