Geocache Description:

With its close proximity to the beach, being an 'off-leash' dog exercise area and relative obscurity, Greenwood Road beach is a paradise among Freedom Camping spots along Surf Highway 45 within the New Plymouth District Council's jurisdiction.

KrystalKath and I have been coming here for years spending many, many nights Freedom Camping on the seven metre wide - or so - grass verge between Greenwood Road and the beach.

The Pitone stream where it exits to the beach offers safe play for children and with the extensive free running sandy beach for the dog, this really is Paradise. The crystal clear clean seawater is a rejuvenating swim, although access across the rocky reef can be annoying. The Stony River 'sand slug' has removed most of the kaimoana from the reef, but the fishing is apparently pretty good at high tide.

New Plymouth District Council Bylaws allow Freedom Camping in any public space, so long as...

  • You are in a self-contained vehicle with sufficient water/waste storage facility for three days
  • You may stay for up to a maximum of three consecutive days in the one location in a calendar month
  • You keep the waterways free from soap, detergents, toothpaste and waste
  • You do not use the bushes or waterways for toileting. Note there is no toilet facilities here
  • You take your rubbish away with you and dispose of responsibly
  • You light no fires
  • You do not block the views of others. Park courteously and legally
  • You be considerate of others, especially adjacent residents. You do not create a nuisance and comply with noise requirements.

If you do stay here, keep an eye out for the CO's Toyota Hiace campervan, dazend. Here a couple of weekends each month
