A visitor to Sfakia, as he comes by road and reaches the opening to the Askifou plateau, usually gets a good view of two ruined forts standing on two hill tops that overlook the plain below. This is the first evidence of a massive undertaking by the Turks, following the Cretan uprising of 1866, to build a large number of forts all around Crete and to station troops there so that they will become aware early of any attempt for a new uprising and stamp it out immediately.
These forts are known by their Greek names as koulés, koulédes in plural, that derives from the Turkish word kule or kale, which means tower. These forts were built within sight of each other so that would enable the Turks to communicate by flags, fire or smoke signals from one fort to another and in many occasions with more than one fort. Some of these forts were large enough to accommodate a number of permanent troops, while others were small observation posts, with larger troop concentrations stationed in nearby larger forts.
This cache is hidden on top of the hill near the completely ruined observation tower. The view is magnificent from up there. The function of the observation post must have been to provide a view over the village of Agios Ioannis and the approach to the fort from the south, in case of imminent rebel attack.
The cache is a preformed plastic bottle well hidden in rocks. Anyway, there is nothing but rocks up there!

O επισκέπτης των Σφακίων, καθώς έρχεται οδικώς και φτάνει στο άνοιγμα προς το Οροπέδιο Ασκύφου, βλέπει δύο ερειπωμένα κάστρα στην κορυφή των λόφων πάνω από το οροπέδιο. Αυτά είναι οι πρώτες ενδείξεις μιας εκτεταμένης επιχείρησης των Τούρκων, που ακολούθησε την επανάσταση του 1866, να χτίσουν ένα μεγάλο αριθμό οχυρωματικών κάστρων στην Κρήτη, απ’ όπου οι στρατιώτες θα επέβλεπαν τις περιοχές και θα κατέστειλαν οποιονδήποτε ξεσηκωμό εν τη γενέσει του.
Τα κάστρα αυτά είναι γνωστά ως Κουλές ή Κουλέδες, λέξεις που προέρχονται από την Τουρκική λέξη kule ή kale και σημαίνει κάστρο. Τα κάστρα αυτά είχαν οπτική επαφή το ένα με το άλλο, πράγμα που έδινε στους Τούρκους τη δυνατότητα να επικοινωνούν μεταξύ τους με σημαίες, φωτιές ή σήματα καπνού. Κάποια από αυτά τα κάστρα ήταν αρκετά μεγάλα ώστε να στεγάζουν μόνιμα στρατιώτες ενώ κάποια ήταν απλά παρατηρητήρια πολύ κοντά σε μεγαλύτερα κάστρα.
Η κρύπτη είναι τοποθετημένη στην κορυφή του λόφου κοντά στο πλήρως κατεστραμμένο παρατηρητήριο και προσφέρει μαγευτική θέα. Το παρατηρητήριο αυτό μάλλον είχε σκοπό να παρακολουθεί τις κινήσεις στην περιοχή που Άι Γιάννη σε περίπτωση ξεσηκωμού.
Η κρύπτη είναι ένας κύλινδρος, ένα άφτιαχτο πλαστικό μπουκάλι κρυμμένο στα βράχια. Έτσι κι αλλιώς, δεν έχει τίποτα άλλο εκεί πάνω παρά βράχια!
