The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever

Stephen Reeder Donaldson is an American fantasy, science fiction and mystery novelist most famous for The Chronicles, his ten-novel fantasy series. The One Tree is the second book of the second trilogy of The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant fantasy series written by Stephen R. Donaldson. It is followed by White Gold Wielder. This book differs from the others in the First and Second Chronicles, in that the story takes place outside of the Land, although still set in the same world.

My favourite characters, apart from main ones like Thomas and Linden Avery, are the 'Haruchai' plus the giants, like Cable Seadreamer. I like the historical Berek Halfhand who has a 'half-hand' like Thomas, missing two fingers.

The contextual richness of the Land's varied geography, races, cultures and history enables all 3 series of the Chronicles to explore and expand upon an increasingly diverse environment. The Wounded Land is the first book, followed by ‘The One Tree’ and the trilogy finishes with my favourite book White Gold Wielder. Ten years have passed since the end of the first Chronicles but we get introduced to a completely new character called Linden Avery. She is a doctor, who has moved to Covenant's hometown to take a position at the local hospital. She is as much an outsider in society as Covenant is.

The Haruchai and the forming of the Bloodguard:- Bannor was a member of the original army of Five Hundred Haruchai to invade The Land during the time of High Lord Kevin Landwaster. When the Old Lords declined to make war on the Haruchai lest they be destroyed and instead welcomed them and showed them wonders, the five hundred, Bannor among them, took an Earthpower-sustained Vow to protect the Lords and formed the Bloodguard. As a Bloodguard, Bannor lived for more than two thousand years without aging or the comfort of a wife. When Thomas Covenant came to Revelstone, Bannor was assigned to ward him.

Since its publication in 1977, Stephen Donaldson's award-winning trilogy has become an indisputable fantasy class, hailed by the critics and loved by millions of readers around the world. Thomas Covenant, an embittered and cynical writer, afflicted with leprosy and shunned by society, is fated to become the heroic saviour of The Land, an alternate world. In the novels, he struggles against the satanic Lord Foul, "The Despiser", who intends to escape the bondage of the physical universe and wreak revenge upon his arch-enemy, "The Creator". Stephen R. Donaldson's works are infused with psychological undertones involving an exploration of the darker side of the protagonist Thomas Covenant, whilst preserving strong humanist ideals. I recommend these books for fantasy fiction fans.
