Avalon Park is a very popular destination for familes throught the Wellington region. The local council recently invested several million dollars in redeveloping the region's largest adventure playground, including the addition of an extensive water-play section. The park also has a bikes skills area, a skate park, large grass area for ball games or sun bathing, mini golf, and the beloved "Lions Train".
The train runs around the park, through a tunnel, over level crossings, and alongside the playground. $2 to ride with all proceeds going back to the Lions Club of Lower Hutt who manage and run the trains. The train operates from 1pm to 4pm on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, depending on weather. It is also run most week days in the school holidays.

"Locomotive Breath" is a song by the British progressive rock band Jethro Tull from their 1971 album, Aqualung.
The term "locomotive breath" refers to the steam exhaust from a steam locomotive. The song's lyrics use the imagery of an impending and unavoidable train wreck as an allegorical portrayal of a man's life falling apart - or even death itself, as Ian Anderson has put it. Despite this, elements of humour are present, as Anderson often includes in his lyrics. The lyrics borrow heavily from Friedrich Dürrenmatt's surrealistic short story The Tunnel.
