Geocache Description:

The cache is not hidden at the listed coordinates, the location of two plaques detailing the history of the Klemzig Recreation Grounds.

Sport has been played on the Klemzig Recreation Grounds since 1909. The Corporation of the Town of Enfield purchased the land from Mr E S Rush, the licensee of the OG Hotel and leased it to the Klemzig Community in 1947. The Klemzig Recreation Grounds were officially opened on 14.2.1948. Management and development was vested in volunteers called Trustees from 1947 to 1966, then Controlling Body from 1966 to 1996, then Controlling Authority from 1996 to 2000. The City of Port Adelaide Enfield resumed control of the grounds on 1.1.2000

The Gaza Sports & Community Club is located at the Klemzig Recreation Grounds and participate in a variety of social and competitive sports, primarily Australian Rules Football, (with men's and women's teams), cricket, darts and 8-ball.

At the turn of the century, Klemzig was known as Kobandilla, but by 1909 the name had been changed and the Klemzig Football Club was formed. In 1916 in the middle of World War I, there was considerable talk about the Government changing the names of towns which had German associations. Then in 1917 it was Gazetted that all towns in South Australia with German names would be changed on January 10th, 1918, to suitable Australian names. Subsequently, Klemzig was changed to Gaza in recognition of the servicemen who had been interred at the Gaza War Cemetery. Units of the Australian Light Horse fought many battles in the Gaza area before eventually winning the day. Gaza in Palestine is one of the oldest cities in the world.

The Gaza Football Club was founded in 1903, then on December 12th, 1935, the name of the suburb reverted to Klemzig, but after Word War II the members of the Gaza football and cricket clubs voted unanimously at an A.G.M. to retain the name Gaza in perpetuity.

In 1947 a trotting track and stables was built by volunteer labour. The success of the track as a training facility can be best judged by the horses educated and trained here including Interdominion Championship winners.
