Butler Head Preserve is a 141-acre woodland site on Merrymeeting Bay under a conservation easement held by the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust (KELT). The conservation easement is a collaborative effort under the guidance of the City of Bath (the owner of the property), the Bath Community Forestry Committee (BCFC), and KELT.
In 1714 William Butler Sr., from Scotland, bought 350 acres on Butler Cove He built a house and later a tavern. As shipping increased in Bath, imports such as rum were commonplace. One can almost picture sailors, full of rum, falling off their ships, and washing ashore at places like Butler Head. This series of caches is composed of the “bones” of long ago sailors (maybe pirates) who met that sad fate.
