HISTORY: On the 1863 plat map, it shows a toll house across the street from this location to the north. When travelers came into Lapeer County, they'd pay a toll, which helped pay for the maintenance on the plank roads. Sometimes the only areas that were planked were in low lying sections. The toll house also included up to date maps of the area and information not much different than what our welcome centers have today. Back then everyone local knew practically everyone else, if not being related, so this knowledge wasn't hard to come by. The toll house wasn't mentioned on the 1874 map and I haven't been able to find much more information about it, such as who was toll keeper or the rates charged.
NOTEWORTHY: To the east of the bank sat several migrant worker homes. These workers were employed for several generations of the Bristol family, one of the very first families in Almont. Many of those workers were sons and grandsons of former workers who kept returning year after year.
