At its peak, Featherston Camp alone could feed more than 9000 men. They had to provide a daily ration of 2.8kg of food per man. In an attempt to resolve the food needs of the camps, soldiers from these camps came to these fields, amongst others, to plant vegetables to help feed the hungry hordes. One of these vegetables was parsnip which over the years has self-seeded and even now is now still clearly visible on the roadsides.
This story was told to us by our elderly neighbour who was born and bred in Greytown and grew up with this story.
We don't suggest you harvest these as the Council does do roadside spraying.
