Geocache Description:

Jerome Lester Horwitz, A.K.A. Jerome Howard, A.K.A. Babe, A.K.A. Curly. A cache exploring the early years of the most famous stooge.

On October 22, 1903, Jerome Lester Horwitz entered this world. He was the last of the five Horwitz brothers born to Solomon and Jennie Horwitz. In much the same manner as happens today, Jerome was the innocent baby who got caught up in the many troublesome antics of his two older brothers, Moe and Shemp, including converting his baby carriage into a soapbox racer, and sending Jerome off to the races! Jerome was often the innocent victim that took the brunt of his brothers' foolish behavior, in a similar way that Curly would take the brunt of Moe's wrath in the 97 short films they starred in in The Three Stooges.

In the absence of Solomon in a fatherly role to Jerome, Moe took on that task.He taught him to swim, and made sure he regularly attended classes in school. Jerome had a tendency to skip classes quite a bit if not prodded to attend. He also tagged along with Moe and Shemp as they began their "acting" careers by putting on various skits, often including young Jerome in their productions.

In 1913, at the age of ten, Jerome was the star player of his school basketball team. He stuck with basketball until the age of fifteen, as pictured below:

But his main love was still theater, and he longed to follow in his two older brothers' footsteps, as they began their own acting careers. In 1916, at the age of thirteen, Curly finally got his first chance to shine at his bar mitzvah. This photo was taken a few weeks after that event:

Around the age of sixteen, Jerome's attention turned to the opposite sex. Being the spoiled youngest child, his mother could now afford to dress him in all of the latest trends, and that bode well with his relationships with girls. He spent his summers at the beach showing off his swimming and diving abilities to all the girls there. As quoted from "Curly: An Illustrated biography of the Superstooge", By Joan Howard Maurer, Moe Howard's daughter, in an interview with one of Jerome's childhood friends Ernestine Goldman, Jerome was "full of the devil.Full of the devil, but  a nice guy. I remember going to the movies with him once - with some friends - and he put his arm around my shoulder, and all of a sudden his hand went down a little bit. I took his hand and I threw it off, and I walked out of the movies and he followed me".

Late that summer of 1916, Jerome and his brothers spent quite a bit of time at their mother's farm in Chatham, NY. (The farm she had purchased was one of her measures of success in her real estate career.) Jerome loved all the animals on the farm, and loved going there. As a sort of paradox to that, he also loved to hunt. It was late in the summer of 1916 when Jerome accidentally shot himself in the foot with a 22 caliber gun. Bleeding profusely, his friend helped him make it back to the farm, where a horrified Moe decided it was best to get him to the nearest hospital in Albany, NY. He came extremely close to having his foot amputated, but chose a different route of trying to let the foot heal by itself. Eventually it did, but he carried that incident with him for the rest of his life, as being on his feet for long periods of time was very difficult.
