Colesville Turnpike
The Colesville and Carpenter's Point Turnpike was chartered in 1851 and ran from Colesville in Wantage westward and across the state line into New York. (Carpenter's Point is where Tri-States is located.) In the early 1800s turnpikes were created to improve wagons and stagecoaches trails. There was a fee to travel over these improved roads. Toll houses were set along the way. As you travel present-day NJ Route 23 past Deckertown Turnpike, you are on parts of that former turnpike.
