A common misconception is that raccoons ‘wash’ their food before eating it, when in fact raccoons manipulate and moisten their food items in water. When water is not available, a raccoon uses many of the same motions in handling its food.
Since Adams County is one of the drier counties in the state, raccoons have a hard time finding water in some areas to aid in their eating habits. But they do reside in the county. While they prefer creatures found in water, on dry land they eat insects, slugs, dead animals, birds and bird eggs, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, and when around humans, they often eat garbage and pet food.
