The Vaca Valley was settled in the early 1840s by the Juan Manuel
Vaca and Felipe Pena families who moved here from New Mexico. On
their way to the gold fields more than one 49er noticed this
fertile valley and returned to settle and prosper. The town was
created in 1852 and incorporated in 1892. Centennial celebrations
resulted in numerous plaques and markers around town, calling
attention to various aspects of this history.
Virtual caches seem to me to be perfect for travelers, there's no
need for geo-trinkets and they give you a chance to learn more
about the landscape and history of the world around you. And even
locals can learn more about their homes by visiting site nearby
they might otherwise rush by.
This virtual cache will take you on a brief tour of some of sites
in town related to this part of our history. Several are downtown,
in and around the Creekwalk, a pleasant place to stroll and enjoy
the quiet atmosphere. On Friday evenings during the summer it's not
so quiet though, as the city presents a series of free concerts.
Come, enjoy and learn.
To complete this cache do this tour and e-mail me the answers to

mounted together with an explaninatory plaque. Who cast these
bells and when? (Two separate firms)
Question 2: Walk west across the creek towards Main Street. Note
the building and plaque at N38 21.397 W121 59.185. This building
has a long and varied history which makes interesting reading.
Who dedicated this plaque? (Chapter and group)
Question 3: Proceed west on Main to N38 21.393 W121 59.270. Find
and read a plaque here with a little-known footnote to a storied
part of western history. Who was the first rider? How many times
was this overland route used in this manner?
Question 4: Walk back to your car and head down to City Hall, west
on Merchant Street. There is a group of ceramic murals mounted in
front of the building at N38 21.058 W 121 59.657. These are the
work of noted ceramicist Guillermo Wagner Granizo. Take a few
minutes to study these panels and soak up the images of life in the
region. Who sponsored the mural that is third from the right end
(the third of the three groups, farthest from the coordinates) and
what does it portray?
