Geocache Description:

This simple cache is placed outside church grounds in view of the chapel. Short term parking is usually available in the chapel car park - except during service and meeting times. This footpath is rarely walked these days and (unusually for Suffolk) is not currently signposted.

Rishangles Baptist Church was founded in April 1849. This fine Baptist Chapel, set prominently at a corner on the Debenham to Eye Road, was opened in 1862. The yellow brick neo-classical frontage is a contrast with the rather more rustice red brick of the sides, with tall windows stretching almost to the eaves. In 1993 a two storey extension was added to the rear. At the time of the 1851 Census of Religious Worship, Rishangles Particular Baptist Chapel had a capacity of about 220, and was full for the afternoon service. There had been 180 in the morning, and George Harris, Minister and local farmer, claimed it was attended by the poor of all the neighbouring parishes. Charles Hill, the pastor of the Particular Baptist Chapel at nearby Stoke Ash, made a similar claim, and undoubtedly this part of Suffolk was predominantly non-conformist in character than Anglican. Rishangles also had a small Wesleyan Methodist Chapel attended by 30 people that morning, but even that was better than the mere 22 who attended the Parish Church of St Margaret.  Today just the Baptist Chapel remains open for worship.
