St Peter - Stoke upon Tern
This cache is one of a series set at or near churches in the lovely surroundings of the Shropshire countryside.
We’d like to thank The Washers for conceiving the idea, initiating the series and inviting other cachers to add to it.
St Peter's is in the village of Stoke upon Tern. In historical documents it is often referred to as 'Stoke Manor' and was a large Domesday manor held by Roger de Lacy. Built in 1874-5, the church features an unusual two-stage tower.
Stoke on Tern was the home of Tom Dutton who, at 7ft 3in tall, was known as the Shropshire Giant. During his life he travelled abroad with a circus and was billed as the Amazing Soldier. Later in life, when living in Stoke on Tern, it is said that he helped to build the church and the school by carrying many of the massive sandstone blocks in his bare hands.
