Geocache Description:

This cache will take you to the site of the cairn for Fort Norfolk which was a minor fortification built at Turkey Point during the War of 1812 to defend the southwestern end of Upper Canada.

In 1795, Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe had selected the Turkey Point area for the construction of a fort and naval station. By 1813 nothing had yet been constructed, but during the War of 1812, the area became of strategic interest to the British. On the orders of General Henry Procter, Lieutenant Wilson and soldiers of the 37th Regiment of Foot constructed a blockhouse and a partial palisade during the winter of 1814 - 15. Fort Norfolk was located on the slope above Turkey Point and was to house several hundred soldiers. From this vantage point, the British troops could be alerted, should the Americans attack from the lake or from the west.   A larger fort and ship building facility was planned, but was never constructed.  Fort Norfolk served as a British military and naval post from 1814 until 1815, but when hostilities ceased, the project was abandoned. By 1826, the fort was in such a state of decay, the naval and military developments were relocated northeast to the Grand River.  A memorial cairn was added in 1922 to mark the location of the site.

Fort Norfolk is now a National Historic Site of Canada.  There are no known remains of Fort Norfolk; however, since its designation the site has been the subject of several archival research projects.
