This statue given to the citizens of Charlottesville in 1919 commemorates the 1803-1806 journey of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. At the time of creation, including Sacagawea at all was probably bold and controversial. Nowadays, the controversy has changed. Sacagawea is depicted as subservient by crouching while the explorers are standing tall and bravely gazing west. Some feel this depiction fails to acknowledge her important role in the exploration and that it frankly discrimates against both women and Native Americans. Others, however feel the statue is a part of history and should be honored as is. As a compromise, in 2009 the city invited two Sacagawea descendants to write a plaque honoring Sacgawea specifically. Is this enough? Should it be removed? Or is it historical and should be left alone?
Where do you stand (or crouch) on this matter?
Congratulations to IncredibleCache on being the first to find!
