Lake of the Woods is a body of water located in Manitoba, Ontario and Minnesota. The shoreline is over 40,000 km's, however if you include the shorelines of the14,522 islands located in Lake of the Woods, it is over 104,000 km's!
Lake of the Woods is home to walleye, northern pike, perch, sauger, crappie, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, lake trout, lake sturgeon, whitefish, suckers and muskellunge.
The northern pike is also called a jackfish or snake. It is sometimes confused with the muskellunge. To help tell the difference between the two, the northern pike have light spots on a dark green background, whereas the muskellunge have dark vertical bands or bars on a light background. The tail fins on the northern pike are rounded versus the tail fins on the muskellunge are more pointed.
We do not usually fish for northern pike, however we have caught a few as they go after a variety of baits.
Above is a picture of Karma with a northern pike that we caught in Lake of the Woods. This isn't a great picture, however you can clearly see the lighter spots on the dark green background and the rounded tail fins.
