Geocache Description:

Be a Dragon Hunter. Be a hero...your quest awaits!

Dragon Hunters come prepared with pens and tools. :)

HC SVNT DRACONES –Daryl, Smokey, or Puff

Dragons...creatures of immense strength.

Dragons...creatures of fire.

Dragons...magical and powerful.

Dragons...creatures representing goodness and luck.

Dragons...winged beasts with serpentine or reptilian features.

Dragons...guardians of treasure.

Dragons feature prominently in literature, particularly in stories featuring heroes! As the author G.K. Chesterton stated:

"Fairy tales do not give the child his first idea of bogey. What fairy tales give the child is his first clear idea of the possible defeat of bogey. The baby has known the dragon intimately ever since he had an imagination. What the fairy tale provides for him is a St. George to kill the dragon."

How better to demonstrate the reality of good versus evil than by having a dragon defeated by a hero!?

Or, perhaps dragons are misunderstood creatures who really just want to be left alone and have been forced into a life of violence in a desperate attempt to protect themselves from the angry villagers with pitchforks and the knights who are just out to rescue a damsel who may-or-may-not be in distress.

This series of geocaches features some of my favourite literary (and screen) dragons.

And, ok, it lets my geek side shine. Just a little. :)

“Stargate-SG1”. A brilliant and long-running television program, encompassing so many excellent things.  Mythology. Ancient Beings. Gods. Egyptians. Aliens. Time Travel. History. Wormholes. Travel within the galaxy.  Travel between galaxies. Human-beings-captured-by-alien-false-gods-in-the-form-of-snakes-and-transported-as-slaves-to-other-worlds-only-to-be-blown-up-because-Ra-isn’t-a-god-gosh-darn-it. Archaeology. History. Military. Girl power. Science power.

*ahem*

Then comes the dragon. Who is the dragon? What does he or she want? What does he or she represent? What is his or her name? Was he or she actually sent by Merlin...or by Morgan Le Fay? Is this even a real-live dragon?

Our heroes know that “name magic is common in most mythologies. To know something’s secret name is to steal its power”...so they start guessing.  While Vala thinks it might be Daryl, and Lt. Col. Mitchell guesses Smokey, Teal’c suggests a much more logical name...Puff.  In fact, they are all wrong and...spoiler alert...the dragon is actually called “Ganos Lal”, and is a hologram created by Morgan Le Fay.
