Geocache Description:

Note: this is a multi and the cach is not at the first co-ordinates.

I finally got round to set up a geocaching trail of my own and hope you enjoy. Lodsworth area is lovely. The area to the East already has a great trail from Jacie B. The west is just as good, if not better, so that is what I picked; LW = Lodsworth West. There are 18 usual caches and 1 multi. The theme is news items when I first was planning the trail. The multi is… well you’ll find out! It is not a circular trail but to get them all would be around 6 to 7 miles long, depending on what route you took. The first bit rises to a plateau area with some lovely views and mostly wooded, the latter bits are a track, road and footpath with mostly fields. Please no night time visits, there are sensitive householders along the trail. There are some footpaths sections, so no mountain bikes must be ridden on these. Have fun and enjoy the views and the trail. Please try your best to put the caches back as intended and let me know any maintenance trips needed.

LW5: Nathan’s Post

I love seeing interesting items around the country and this fits the bill! This very fancy footpath direction post is a memorial to Lord Nathan 2nd Chairman of the Sussex Conservation board who was a prominent London Solicitor and environmental campaigner. He lived in nearby Lickford.

He died in 2007 and the idea of a sculpture was chosen as a memorial for him. A specialist chainsaw sculpture maker was commissioned from Horsted Keynes  - David Lucan. He produced the post from a single piece of oak and very fine it is to! At the top there is a violin as the Lord loved and played this instrument. At the bottom there is a fox to commemorate the countryside that was a big part of the Lord’s life. The acorn and oak leaves represent the Lord’s war record with the 17th/21st Lancers: North Africa, Italy and post war Greece. He was twice wounded and once mentioned in despatches.

The central brass plaque is a line from the Sussex Poet Hilaire Belloc from nearby Duncton Hill (look South-East and the hill is there on the ridge of the South Downs) “He does not die who can bequeath some influence to the land he knows”. I thought that was very apt!
