Geocache Description:

While placing caches reachable from the public access points in Rock Run Stream Valley Park, the third I placed turned out to be for horses as well as hikers.  Before placing that cache, I followed the equestrian trail across the golf course, past the tennis court and up to Sandalfoot Drive.

In the 1980's I was involved in the initial planning for the equestrian trails on the Avenel Farm Tract, as member of the Avenel Equestrian Board representing the neighborhood and advocating tor hiking and biking trails.  Stream Valley Parks are public lands set aside to protect the watershed.  Developers donate the land as a part of the development approval process.  Public access points and trails are designated while the individual property boundaries are being determined.  Home owners enjoy having undeveloped parkland that extends their view and like not having to pay taxes on the land.  They tend not to like having outsiders parking on their street and walking along their property line and into their woods.  Often, publc access points are not marked at all.  Sometimes plantings grow and obscure the access location from casual passersby.  Unfortunately, the public lands are often not maintained as they should be.  Trails are washed out and not repaired and blocked by fallen trees; trash is allowed to accumulate.  This is particularly evident in a development as exquisitely groomed as Avenel.

If there is trash among the trees, it's a part of the park.  For a topographical map of the Rock Run Stream Valley Park showing the public access points, see the Related Page link above.

The cache is not far from the equestrian trail.  The container is one I carry in my geobag to refresh caches that need help.  It is smaller than my usual hide, but there are a couple of hot wheels cars, pens and a small log.

Congratulations to RDIP for being the First to Find early on a rainy morning
