Description:
Adam Diehl, a local beef farmer built the Augustine Hotel in 1814 and sold it in 1837. In 1867 Simeon Lord, a Philadelphia Hotel Keeper bought it and built 100 bath houses, a dance pavilion, and renovated the dining room. He brought vacationers from Philadelphia and Wilmington by steamboat to his beach resort. From the 1940s on, it didn't rent rooms and was known as a taproom.
It was named after Augustine Herman, who spoke 6 languages and was a trader for the Dutch West India Company. He was also a surveyor and mapped large areas of Maryland for Governor Calvert. In 1660 he was given 20,000 acres of land in Maryland and Delaware by Governor Calvert, for which he named Bohemia Manor. One of his sons settled in this area and named it Augustine Manor. In 1814 the Augustine Inn was built. It was put on the National Register of Historical Places in 1972. The inn is now closed and door boarded
