long ago there was a large Saxon settlement near this cache and the name Wittenham is believed to originate with the Saxon chieftain Witta. Ham means farmstead in Old English, so ‘Witta’s ham’ would mean the farmstead of Witta. Or it could just mean Wet-Town due to its location on the banks of the Thames.
Before the old ford and toll bridge over the Thames at Clifton Hampden, the cache can also be accessed by the Thames footpath here just next to the bridge and there is a large free car park
It is possible to drive almost all the way to the cache and park in the entrance to the trackway, it is a public right of way.
