Land for the Spencer Street railway reserve was set aside in 1853. The first shed was constructed in 1859, followed by 3 more in the next decade. By 1882 the Spencer Street railway site covered an area of 74 hectares (183 acres). The railway precinct was located adjacent to Victoria Dock, providing a link between rail and sea transportation and creating a thriving industry of associated trades and businesses.
