Charles Coulomb created an equation in 1785 called Coulomb's inverse-square law, describing the electrostatic interaction between electrically charged particles (and he could not even see them!). If you have ever rubbed a balloon on your hair and stuck it to the wall, you know that like charges repel and opposite charges attract.
