Gran Grae - is German for "great place". At one time there was a grist (grain) mill, a cheese factory, a school and a cemetery in this valley, although they were not located close together. The cheese factory is now a house up the valley a couple miles. The grist (grain) mill was located on the creek across the road and up a bit from the cemetery. The school house was near highway 60.
When there is a hard rain, the entire valley will flood, most recently in 2012. In the mid-1800's a flood came through washing the grist mill away. The owner, a German immigrant, looked at the destruction and said in despair - isn't this a gran grae!?! - and the name stuck. This may be the same Henry Weniger who built the first artesian well mill in the world in Prairie du Chien, as Henry Wineger family members buried here.
The streams from the family farm flow into the Gran Grae. Family still live on the farm, they provided the local history. This cache was placed by family members of team Fleet Feet and Huff and Puff (FFHP)
There are 10 - 20 people buried in the burials, walk up and take a look, it is unusual. Perhaps their ghosts, and the ghost of the grist mill will help you locate the cache.
