Spirit of Honokaia Traditional Cache

Camp Honokaia has been the summer camp for Big Island scouts for approximately 40 years.  Located in a eucalyptus forest, it is traditionally known for three things:  rain, mud, and mosquitos.  Or as the guidebook says “Poncho or raincoat, rubber boots, and insect repellent are a MUST at Camp Honokaia”.  Still, the amenities (or lack thereof) are a source of pride to the scouts that make it through their week at Honokaia.

The cache is an ammo can that will start with scouting-based swag.  To avoid blocking the camp’s access driveway, please park near the waypoint coordinates which are located in a pull-out area across Highway 19 on the mauka side of the road. If you’ve reached the pipe gate you’ve gone too far.

This cache has been placed to introduce scouts to the experience of geocaching, so it should be a quick park and grab for most. Geocaching was introduced as an official merit badge in 2010.
