Lockwood Cemetery in Byram NJ was built cira 1818. The cemetery consists of about 30 gravestones, with slight remnants of the foundation of the church that once was there..
The Cemetery was associated with the Methodist Episcopal Church
which was located between the cemetery and the road (now Rt 206 N). When the Waterloo
Church was completed in 1859, most of the members went either to
Waterloo or Stanhope and the Lockwood Church fell into disuse and disrepair.
We are told that there are a number of Applegits and Smiths buried here and there is a rumor that a seven foot tall man was buried in front of the church.
The cache is located a resspectful distance from the main grave area. Please show similar respect for the general area and the site. The area is amazing as it is 200 years old and yet, only 50 feet from a very busy and modern Route 206. Some of the graves might still be somewhat legible if you take the time to read them.
The container is a micro and please mind the rocks as you walk toward GZ. DO NOT attempt to park or stop on Route 206!! Use the parking lot (coords are given in the Waypoint info). It is then a short, safe 1500 feet or so walk to the site. No need to cross Rt 206.
Please do not attempt to remove the container top. Just open the container, extract the log (bring a tweezers), sign and rerplace as found. Hints upon request. Enjoy the history of the place!
