The Motueka River, 60 kilometres to the south of Nelson flows for 120 kilometres, first through rough hill country and then through more gently undulating terrain.
Beginning in the Gordon Range, near Golden Downs and in the Red Hills area, the river flows into Tasman Bay, meeting the sea between Motueka and Riwaka. Along the lower reaches of the river, from Woodstock to Motueka you can choose which side of the river you travel on. Both sides are picturesque and feature small-holdings many of which would once have supported a tobacco growing enterprise - - - but now have a variety of uses.
