Hog Pond trail is an under-utilized but interesting hike both for the variety of ecosystems and scenery and for amusing yourself with historical speculation. The trail is a continuation of W Central St. in Old Homosassa extending about 3 miles east to US 19, and has remnants of old blacktop surfacing some of the trail, suggesting it might have been a main route into Homosassa at some time in the past. One’s imagination can easily turn side trails and clearings into old homesteads and meadows into farms. The scenery ranges from sandy scrubland near US 19 through ponds and meadows to dense lowland forest and swamp near Homosassa.
The trail is open for hiking and bicycling and can be accessed from the main parking lot at the Hog Pond Trailhead on US19. A few parking spaces are available at the Homosassa end where the trail joins with W Central St.
