I grew up in these woods, as did my father's family. At one time this used to be a fruit farm complete with a look out tower to watch over it, it encompassed a lot more land them. As sections were sold off the area now called the Ott Biological Preserve was allowed to go wild and became a preserve (at least that is teh way I heard it) It was sold in the 70's and became neglected. It was not blocked off and people used it for all kinds of fun, from four wheeling in trucks, and dune buggies, to motorcycles, all enjoyed the trails. In the early 90's some 300 treese were sold and marked to be cut down. This rallied the community to stand against destroying the area and the logging was stopped. A fence was created and some of the main trails were blocked off. Motorized vehicles were prohibited from entering the area. New trails were created to preserve the wet lands and vegetation within the area.
Now the Ott Biological Preserve is getting another new look. A 14 foot hard dirt trail is to go around the boarders connecting it with the North County trail. With the trail system almost complete I hope you use them, as well as the old ones, to see the beauty of the area, fall in love with it as I have, and help protect it from further damage.
