To get to the cache, take state route 124 to the turnoff for Ice Harbor Dam at Monument Road. Follow the road to the dam and when the paved road bends right to the dam, proceed straight toward the river on the gravel road past a warehouse to a barrier of yellow painted pipe. Turn left (west) and follow the gravel road along the yellow pipe downriver to the parking area (coordinates provided). Please do not block the gate. From there you will take a short hike to the cache. The terrain rating is for a short uphill stretch. Follow the old road up the side of the hill and the walk will be easier. In warm weather, please use care and watch for rattlesnakes.
Here's a chance for a two-fer! This cache is near our Ice Harbor Volcano (GC5HGZJ) earthcache. The cache and the road to parking are on Corps of Engineers public land.
The Ice Harbor Dam has a visitor center that is open April 1 through October 31. Visitor center hours are 9 to 4:30PM. There is a fish window for viewing salmon and other fish swimming up the fish ladder, displays, and movies on the Snake River, Lewis & Clark, the Glacial Floods, and other topics.
Bird lovers be sure to bring your binoculars. The area close to the cache is a great water bird viewing area. Each time we have been there we have seen many types birds including gulls, ducks, geese, pelicans and cranes in the shallows below the dam.
