On a Spring evening in 1966 officer Rodney Wentling was on patrol along south Mercer street in Greenville, Pa. As he entered a car lot, he noticed three juveniles sleeping in a car. They had robbed a house and stolen several guns and the car. During the encounter, a 15 year old gunman shot and fatally wounded the officer. Rodney Wentling was 23 years old and just starting his law enforcement career. He was an outstanding high school athlete and won the state championship in wrestling. Officer Wentling had recently returned to his home town to serve the community and paid the ultimate price.
This park was named in honor of his memory. But there is also a monument to all the men and women in law enforcement who are dedicated to serve and protect the community and face the same risks and dangers. I am thankful for the service of our military personnel and our law enforcement officers.
