This puzzle is a tribute to ecrane's (now archived) Four letter words: Lips.
Word ladders are a classic puzzle invented by Lewis Carroll (who called them doublets) where you must transform one word into another by changing one letter at a time, and each intermediate step must be a valid word itself, common enough to be found in a standard English dictionary. His very first offering: turn HEAD into TAIL:
HEAD - HEAL - TEAL - TELL - TALL - TAIL (There are four step solutions but they involve either a very-archaic English word or a non-English word)
In 1965, Dimitri Borgmann pointed out that the ideal form of this wordplay would change an n letter word in n moves. Of course, this often prevents the charm of changing witty pairs such as PINK into BLUE or LIVE into DEAD.
I don't claim that my little ladders are charming, but they do meet the "ideal" of n mioves, that is, three intermediate steps between the 4-letter starting word and the goal.

Because there may be more than one legitimate wordladder connecting a pair, consider the following clues for the necessary steps (but clues not necessarily in correct order)
part of foot, less brightly-colored, cow group, kind of tree, windowglass, listen to suggestions
Checksum 3 digit N = 19, W = 20
There are online solvers for word ladders, but you probably will enjoy it more if you figure out these word arrangements yourself.
Cache is a bison, not camo'd, slightly concealed at a safe roadside pullout.
