Description.
I enjoyed the original series of Battlestar Galactica but was very happy when the ‘reimagined’ series was aired, a worthy update to 70’s version.
Cache Type.
Chatterley Whitfield Colliery is off the A527 Biddulph Road, between Tunstall and Brindley Ford, near Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. The site was first used as a coal merchant’s yard from approximately 1750 onwards. It then operated as a colliery around 1850 until it closed in 1976, although underground mining continued from the nearby Wolstanton Colliery until 1986. In its heyday six shafts existed on the site, Hesketh, Platt, Institute, Middle, Engine and Winstanley. The Engine and Middle Pits have since been filled but the other four, complete with their winding gear remain. In 1937 it became the first colliery in Britain to mine one million saleable tons of coal in one year, a feat repeated in 1938.
Chatterley Whitfield Heritage Country Park opened after three years of work to transform 50 hectares of the former colliery spoil heap. Around one-third of the spoil heap was removed and used to landscape the ground. Ford Green Brook that formerly ran through a culvert under the spoil heap was restored into an ecologically friendly open stream. The restored brook and a variety of trees and wildflower plants complement other areas helping to bring wildlife to the park.
