Željava Airbase, situated on the border between Croatia Bosnia and Herzegovina under Plješevica Mountain, near the city of Bihać, Bosnia, was the largest underground airport in the former Yugoslavia, and one of the largest in Europe
Construction of the Željava or Bihać Airbase, code name Objekat 505, began in 1948 and was completed in 1968. During those two decades, SFRJ spent approximately $6 billion on its construction, three times the combined current annual military budgets of Serbia and Croatia. It was one of the largest and most expensive military construction projects in Europe.
The complex was designed and built to sustain a direct hit from a 20 kiloton nuclear bomb, equivalent to the one dropped on Nagasaki.
Short video and Wiki and Scheme and recently released documentary Huston, we have a problem.
Parts of Mazda commercials were shot inside of airbase.
The cache is situated at the entrance of air base. Further visiting of air base is hazardous and not advised if you do not know the risks and legal status of the site. Take care!
Current status edit. The new box is on a new location in the plane accessible from outside. No need to go in the plane. As box went missing several times I' ve put small alu army lunch box and secured it with liquid metal and screws. There is still old temporary box with logbook thanks to FRUlTIK left for back up. Fingers crossed this time lasts longer. Both locations are in the hint.
