You may have noticed a large collection of cars whilst approaching this cache. The creation and popularity of the motor car and bus sped up the demise of the railway. You can imagine nowadays that if you gave someone the choice between a slow train, from which you would need to climb another 200ft after alighting, or a fast motor car/bus, which can take you right to the top of the Dyke what the decision would be. People in the 20's/30's were not so different.
Passenger numbers dwindled and the railway was no longer financially viable.
I can't find an exact picture of the bus that went to the Dyke, but this is probably close...

Doing the series by bus:
The bus is recommended (ironic), as this isn't a circular series.
To start at CC1 get a 5 or 5A, get off in Old Shoreham Rd at the Aldrington Road stop and walk down to the station. To start at CC7 get a 5B and get off at the Dyke trail entrance. The Dyke bus is the 77 (catch at the hotel), which is sometimes open-top, but at certain times of the year-autumn/winter this service only runs at the weekend.
Cars:
There are various car parks and roads along the route, especially at CC7. You may want to do sections and then go back to your car, drive to another car park and do the next section.
