Un sentiero nascosto mi conduce all’ombra tua,
mio caro e vecchio amico che tendi al cielo,
a guadagnar la luce, nodosi rami dal tuo tronco antico.
Ci ritroviamo qui; la scure ingorda ti ha risparmiato,
forse per pietà,
quasi un gentile omaggio a chi ricorda,
i tempi belli di una verde età.
Tu, prima che l’autunno premuroso colori,
col suo giallo, le tue foglie,
già pronto all’avventura dell’inverno,
schiudi ancora i tuoi ricci e, generoso,
porgi frutti che, oramai, nessuno coglie;
gigante buono, tu mi appari eterno.

The big Chestnut
An hidden path leads me under your shadow,
my dear old friend who stretches to the sky,
to gain the light, gnarled branches from your ancient trunk.
We find ourselves here; the greedy ax had spared you,
maybe for mercy,
almost a kind tribute to those who remember,
the good times of a green age.
You, before the tender autumn colors,
with his yellow, your leaves,
ready to the winter adventure,
unfold again your curls and, generous,
offer the fruits that noone takes anymore;
gentle giant, you appear to me eternal.
