Geocache Description:

This cache has been placed in a "tomb" near the High Falls of the Cheat River.

There are several ways to get to this cache. You can come from the north on the Cheat Mountain Salamander, or come by excursion train from the south. I only found that out after traversing a mountain to the falls and meeting dozens of passengers from the aforementioned modes of transportation.

I turned north off of US Route 33 at Alpena. There is a lodge and restaurant at the intersection. You will be on County road 27. Go 9.5 miles to Glady. There you will turn left on County road 22 and go 0.3 miles and turn right. Follow this road (it will turn to gravel) for 3.9 miles to the High Falls Trailhead (Tr 345). The sign will be on the left, the trail, on the right at N 38 45.005, W 79 45.159. There are places to park just beyond the trail head.

Take the trail. It is clearly marked with blue blazes. It will cross the stream (wooden footbridge) then cross the West Fork (rail-trail. At this point High Falls Trail and Allegheny Trail are together as you climb the mountain. At the top of the mountain, the Allegheny Trail (TR701) and goes off to the left and High Falls Trail passes through a beautiful coniferous forest and then drops down to the Cheat River. When you reach the railroad tracks, go right. The cache is only about 0.2 miles from the trail, thus on your way to the falls (0.5 miles from the cache).

On the left of the tracks, you will see a wide area of coal slag and tailings, the cache is up the hill to your right from here. Ascend the bank to a flat area, and there are to either side of you, gouges in the hill, go up this hill between the two little gouges. The cache is here in a stone "tomb" (only 100 yards from tracks) It is in a plastic ammo box

While the train ride would be fun, the hike over Shaver's Mountain is worth the trip to the cache.
