The land across from the store was owned by Randal Eldred, hence the name of the curve in Bayou Boeuf. Mr. Bennett arrived here to be a school teacher but after marrying Eldred’s daughter he purchased a 200 acre plantation eventually owned m860 acres where he grew cotton and later sugar cane. In 1848 he built a sugar mill.
Although not mentioned in the book “Twelve Years a Slave” this would have been the store frequented by everyone in the area. The store itself was in continuous operation from at least 1817 until the late 1960s.
