Honryuji Temple

Honryuji was founded in 1618 and became a branch temple of Homyoji in 1828. It was originally used as a hermitage for mountain monks (yamanushi) but after a while became a standard temple. It was also used as the main house of the seventh generation Sakakibara Lord. In 1945 the temple burned down in the fire bombings of Tokyo. After the war, the current temple buildings were relocated to the current location.

Honryuji iss said to have been founded by the Sun Wing Zen School betwee 1624-1644 but it is not clear.
An interesting story has it that the Lord Sakakibara took a geisha, Takao-san, for a concubine, and was rebuked by the imperial court. His home and lands were all revoked because of this, and the land was given to the Takada Clan of Echigo (current Ishikawa Prefecture). Because of this shame, Takao-san became a nun, and nine years later (1789) she died in this temple.

The area is very close to downtown Ikebukuro, a very lively, and bustling area. However, once you enter the grounds, the peace and quietude feels like you are miles away from the hustle and bustle of busy, modern Tokyo.

Hours of operation: 06:00-18:00 (about). Not 24 hours.

The cache is across the street from the entrance and micro.
Please bring a pen.
Enjoy the peace! (
