Also known as the Coypu, or river rat, the Nutria looks like a beaver without the flat tail. They build dams.
Last summer a gang of these critters moved into this greenway.These guys are quite destructive. They severely damaged much of the foliage and shrubbery. They also dammed the creek in a couple of places causing some minor flooding. When they started chewing on the fruit and landscape trees in the surrounding yards, war was proclaimed.
A couple of the neighborhood guys tore down the dams. Surely this would send a message.....YOUR NOT WELCOME HERE....MOVE ON!!
Imagine our surprise when the next morning the dams were rebuilt! After a couple more episodes with no positive results, the city parks department came in and cleaned house. So far, no signs of the river rats.
