Ceredigion's metal mining heritage stretches back into prehistory. Some 4000 years ago, copper was mined in this area and archaeologists have identified prehistoric workings at Neuadd yr Ynys to the west of the village.
Local men worked in a number of mines in the area. Llangynfelyn mine to the west of Tre Ddol was one of these. The site of which is now marked by a solitary red-brick chimney.
Other mines in the area were Llain-hîr mine, just south of Tre Ddol and mines in the hills to the east where there are also couple of geocaches. The earliest mines were copper mines. Copper was used to make tools such as axe heads even before the technique of making bronze (an alloy of copper and tin) was discovered. A copper axe, that was made over 4000 years ago, has been found at Rhydypennau, near Talybont. During the 19th Century lead, silver and copper mining became an important industry in this area.
The cache itself is just off the trail that leads from the road. Please leave any gates as you find them and replace it carefully.
