Geocache Description:

Maplewood Cemetery in Wilson, NC is a very historic cemetery. It started in 1876 as the first public cemetery in town. This WhereIGo cartridge will take you to several prominent graves and also provide a little history about the city of Wilson. There is an introduction, followed by 10 zones and then the final cache location. You should be able to walk to all locations after parking. I would allow at least an hour to complete the cartridge.

UPDATE:  The main entryway is blocked.  I presume this is blocked due to concerns about the structure.  The cemetery is open and you can enter from many side roads.  The No Trespassing signs are there for loiterers.  Walking around and exploring historical markers around the cemetery is perfectly acceptable, provided that it is from dusk to dawn.  The original hide has been replaced a few times and is now a well hidden bison (not hanging).  I would suggest starting the WhereIGo cartridge just before arriving to the cemetery entrance. You will want to drive through the main archway in the photo above and park along the side or on one of the clearly marked paths. The cemetery is only open from DAWN TO DUSK. Please do not attempt this cache at night. Walking around the cemetery to look at graves, perform research, check out interesting monuments, and perform this WhereIGo are perfectly fine. The NO TRESPASSING signs are mainly for evenings and to keep out loiterers.

I have planned to do a multicache here for several months, but was persuaded to change it to a WhereIGo. This is my first attempt at creating this type and I now see why there are not many around. I think it is great, but it's not the easiest thing to do. I'm glad that we will now have a WhereIGo east of Durham and it's a great way to give people a brief history of Wilson.

WhereIGo cartridges can be completed with the WhereYouGo app for Android, WhereIGo app for iPhone, some Garmin GPS units and Pocket PC. You will need to download the WhereIGo cartridge before you begin. This cartridge has been tested on both an Android phone and an iPhone. I use the Android app and one frustrating thing for me is that the compass does not point in the correct direction. However, you can start walking and if the distance is dropping, you'll know you are going in the correct direction. A couple of these zones seem to have restless spirits who like to wreak havoc on your GPS. Just walk around until the zone activates. Due to the fluctuation in GPS accuracy, I have made each zone appear when you are within 10 feet. Because of this, you may have to look around a bit to find the actual tombstone. You will be given the names of each one, so it should not be too difficult to find. Trial and error works best.

Have fun!
