Whilst there are several other caches fairly nearby, we wanted to bring you here mainly to see the amazing view from the little 'pew'. We certainly don’t want to bore you with science, but there are so many incredible remains in this part of the island that we thought it might be interesting to set a trail featuring some of the more unknown ones. These are the remains of the three -aisled ‘Extra Mural Basilica’ dating from the late 5th to mid 7th century AD but are thought to be built on the site of a previous temple dedicated to Demeter and Kore and dating back to the third century BC. This is according to an inscription on the base of a statue found in 1895 that reads:
ΔΕΜΕΤΡΗ ΚΑΙ ΚΟΡΗΙ ΕΥΧΗΝ ΕΛΛΟΟΙΚΟΣ ΠΟΤΕΙΣΟΣ ΑΝΕΘΗΚΕ
Which translates to: dedicated to Demeter and Kore, by Hellooikos, son of Poteisis.
This information was taken from the book ‘Kourion it’s Monuments and Local Museum’ by Dr. Demos Christou.
We have given co-ordinates for parking, but it is possible to drive nearer to the cache site in a 4x4.
As always in Cyprus, please be aware of snakes. Also, please try to avoid treading on the wild flowers.
