This cache marks the staging area to one of Southern Utah's little known wonders. Red Canyon, called “Peek-a-Boo Canyon” by the locals - is a spectacular red rock slot canyon ranking among the best places to visit in this amazing state.
The canyon itself is four miles down a road with heavy sand from the trailhead. As cool as the canyon is, please don't try to see it unless you are in an appropriately equipped jeep, ATV, or dune buggy. Even jeeps have been known to get stuck on this road. Of course, you could hike to it as well. Take plenty of water if you do.
Peek-a-Boo Slot Canyon is one of dozens of slot canyons in Kane County. Slot Canyons are long, narrow canyons with towering walls created from water cutting through sandstone over thousands of years. Peek-a-Boo is a moderate depth slot canyon but a local favorite. It is north of Kanab above the north Best Friends Animal Sanctuary turn off on Hwy 89. Make sure and bring a camera! You will enjoy the spectacular colors as you walk through the narrow slot with sandstone walls rising high above you on either side.
